 Skeleton arm and 'breaking' joints

As a part of learning overlapping animation I was taught how to 'break' joints went animating limbs.
The main idea of this research and exercise is the concept of using straight line to create the arc and curves that makes movement so fluid and lively.

In order to achieve this effect is by having various parts moving at different times.
The examples below are from the 'The Animator's Survival Kit' DVD's that coincide with the book of the same name written by Richard Williams.

Went moving the arm keep an eye on the joints as they as they are the pivots that allow the of the arms bend with elbow often bending the most. The elbows is what leads the movement of the arm.

This more subdued example as a lot of  focus of the wrist as well as the elbow.

In the examples above you can see that the arm often forms curve.

Skeleton arm progress-

To better understand the joints in the arm I animated a basic ragdoll like arm which when pulled by the shoulder causes everything to drag behind it with each segment of the arm moving at slight different times.
